10 things

IMG_4447

This week was just one of those normal weeks. Parks, Tantrums, Toddler School, Coffee Dates, Nap Times, Non-Napping Nap times, Repeat. Sometimes….weeks are just weeks. At one point, I thought I was going to have to start actually exercising or something crazy like that just for something new to happen. Clearly that didn’t go down so I’m stuck here thinking of the most random things…..

1. My favorite thing to do on the weekend is wake up early, complete a task and go back to bed. Pre-M this was an almost every Saturday thing. Wake. Breakfast. Sleep. Anyone else on this?

2. A few years ago, I needed a solid uninterrupted hour to get ready for the day. I surprised myself this week by going from shower to car in 20 minutes. Times are a changing.

3. Pepsi is my soda of choice. I was so happy to read that I’m no longer the only one!

4. I rotate store obsessions like no other but right now, it’s all heart eyes for Madewell.

5. When we moved into our new abode my hair was suddenly a grease pit. Honestly, it was just so gross and wet to the touch and NOTHING I did changed that. This shampoo rocked my hair world and now I hoard at least one spare under my bathroom cabinet at all times.

6. Will a houseplant ever survive around me?Heeellllpppp!

7. My friend Lacie and I met on a blind mom date. Yup! Two of our mutual friends set us up with some well thought out Facebook messages. A Nordstrom Cafe meet up with two three month olds and the rest is history….

8. My favorite food group is and always will be chocolate. Mixed with something salty and boom…I’m a happy camper.

9. I never wear eyeshadow. On a rare night out it finds it’s way to my face. Otherwise, no thanks. And on the same note, can we talk about false lashes? I just can’t. My eyelids feel heavy and I look like my eyes are drooping when I wear them. What’s the trick here?

10. In high school I wore a Harvard sweatshirt around like a boss. I was certain my B average would award me Harvard entrance.  Hummm…..

the others

It’s probably been way too long since I mentioned our other children around here. Did you even know we had dogs? Poor guys seem to be stuck behind the scenes these days. But as the days get warmer, we’ve gotten to enjoy more time with them outside and I was able to get a few pictures of our furry kids for some introductions…..

jackson1Jackson is our 80 lb goldendoodle. Yes, goldendoodle. Everyone always gets caught up on that. He had a golden retriever for a mom and black standard poodle for a dad. My friend Bree says that Jackson is a person in a dog suit and that’s pretty much all you need to know about him. He’s THE BEST.

sadie1

And then there’s this one. I joke that Sadie is my step-dog. When I met a six foot five handsome guy named Kyle in college, I was a littler perplexed about his tiny eight pound dog. Then I saw him walking her and girls basically running towards him to pet his tiny companion. Mystery solved.  Anyway, she barks A LOT and is a mix of about every small dog under the sun but she loves us so much and is just pint sized enough for M to run after all day.

So that’s that.

hashtag : show me your table

coffee table1

In our last house, we used an ottoman where a coffee table would have been and an eight foot kitchen island instead of a proper dining table. So when the prospect of moving came up, I got a little giddy thinking about styling tables. Maybe that’s weird. I don’t know. But every time I would go to a friends house and their table had just the right feel, I was a tiny bit jealous.

We needed an odd sized table for our space so Kyle built our coffee table using Thimble & Cloth’s DIY with few of our own personal touches. We used 14″ hairpin legs and distressed the wood to help it fit in with our modern farmhouse angle. Then it was my turn to decorate it.

With a two year old running around, you can’t go too crazy but I think we got the job done. I found the basket at a local antique shop and threw the rest together with a few things I had around the house plus one or two new items.

Now the fun part! I want to see your coffee table action. Follow the #showmeyourtable on Instagram and add your photos in. I’ll be posting my table styling and want to see what you have going on as well.

So, c’mon …#showmeyourtable.

pictures of the market

market1On Saturday, I hosted my book club for brunch. We chatted about Big Little Lies but mostly, we marveled over the yogurt my good friend Laura showed up with. Words just can’t explain how amazing this stuff is. So good that Lacie and I schemed up a Sunday outing for our families at Pikes Place. We were pretty amazing tourists checking out the gum wall, fish throwing and doing all the things that would have made it a legitimate outing but mostly, we were there for the yogurt.

IMG_4414

Actually, the gum wall was really a highlight for the girls. All of us adults crammed some gross Big League Chew in our mouths and handed it over for M & G to add to the masterpiece (parent things.).

Market2

We thought about buying vegetables but took the really logical path and bought bouquets instead.

Market3

I forgot how exciting and iconic Pikes Place feels. Out of curiosity, I looked it up when I got I got home and learned that it opened in 1907. Say Whhhaaaa??? Learning things about my own city. Gotta’ love that!

chocolate overnight oats

IMG_3988

Breakfast has been a broken record of eggs, vegi sausage, toaster waffles and yogurt lately. In a desperate attempt to derail that boring cycle, I went searching Pinterest for some easy recipes and landed on overnight oats. I used this recipe as a starting point then improvised with what I had in my kitchen. We’ve been enjoying these cups all week and I feel like they are a total triumph over our boring breakfast standards.

What You Need ||

1 cup gluten free rolled oats

1 cup coconut milk

3 large strawberries, chopped

1 tbsp cocoa powder

sprinkle of chai seeds

sprinkle of flax seeds

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tsp maple syrup

blueberries

1 chopped banana

coconut shavings

What You Do ||

1. Combine oats, coconut milk, strawberries, blueberries, chai seeds, flax seeds, vanilla extract, maple syrup and blueberries in a large bowl. Stir until completely mixed.

2. Half fill a few pint sized mason jars with mixture (mine filled three jars)

3. Chill overnight

4. Stir and add banana and coconut as a toppings

A week turned into a few months and when all is said and done, it’s been almost six months. This little blogging absence was both ‘oops!’ and ‘ahhhhh!’ all at once. I never meant to step away for so long but once I was away, it just hurt so good. Slowly though, little by little, it didn’t feel so great any more and the itch to put my fingers to keyboard started to come back to me.

Truth is, I really love this space. I love the comments and the freedom to use my own my mind to create and craft and it shouldn’t be as hard as I was making it out to be. So, anyway, I think a simple what the heck I’ve been doing lately (because we all know it hasn’t been blogging) is in order…..

^^ First things first. Most of my time has been spent with THIS! I finally stopped crying like a baby and ponied up to selling our house. I won’t bore you with the crusty details but we bought in a totally different area then we were originally looking and fell in love with this total fixer. We’ve spent our time demoing walls, creating new walls, ripping out that wonderful 1970’s wood burning stove, pulling up and replacing all the flooring, creating an entirely new kitchen, painting like crazy and decorating where the budget allows. We aren’t completly done (and I don’t imagine we will be for a few years) but we aren’t having ‘picnics’ on the floor any more and the wires dangling from the celing have been tucked away. #remodelsarenojoke

^^ In October, we left the house in a mid-reno mess and went to Disney with Kyle’s entire family. For the second year in a row, we partied at Mickey’s Halloween shin-dig and, as only Disney can do, it was magical. Little Mady wore a bee costume and when she met Minnie Mouse, my heart just about melted all over that pristine Disney sidewalk. She got all red and nervous but couldn’t hold back from throwing her arms around the tiniest Minnie I’ve ever seen.

I imagine I would act in a similar style if Oprah appeared on the streets offering hugs.

IMG_1151 IMG_1487

^^Oh you know, just fall and about 29 different pumpkin patch visits happened.

IMG_1522

^^ I think I’ve had somewhere around 218 cups of coffee since my last post. (Riveting stuff right….)

Jamie+Troy Wedding 77

^^ I also took a solo trip to Florida to be in the wedding of one of my longest friends (friends since the 4th grade!). I can’t remember the last time I stayed in a hotel room alone or flew without someone to chat with. It was a mix of strange and wonderful all wrapped into one.

IMG_2207 IMG_2267

^^ Practically right off the plane from Florida, I hopped on another (this time with my trusty companions) to spend Thanksgiving with my family in Kauai.

ChristmasCard

^^ And just like that, it was Christmas. This was our holiday card photo this year. We intended to all be in it but Kyle and I are just not as photogenic as this little peanut. She nailed the whole day of cookie making and perfect photo location scouting so a solo card was well deserved.

Six months summed up in a few photos hardly does it justice but I think that’s the big stuff. To really catch up, find me on Instagram — @prettywednesday.

5 Minute M || Playdate Cafe

photo 4 (3)

OK, so really this is like the 20 Minute M but whatever! She is one crazy girl these days and had the best time with her friend Gemma  at the Playdate Cafe a few days ago. The weather was ehhhh so we tossed our plans for a beach day and headed here instead. The girls loved it and played for longer then I’ve ever seen M play without boredom striking. Plus, the pics were just too funny not to share. I mean, look at these four sets of eyes staring at us! Happy Monday!

Behind The Scenes || The Bus

Bus3

M is in a phase where constant energy, attention and play is required. So, she finds it really frustrating when I try to cook a meal. Why can’t she be held right next to the hot stove? Silly mom, right? And last night, when Ky could see that his dinner was in danger due to our ‘pick up the tot, cook as quickly as possible’ dance, his imagination kicked in and she got a full dose of daddy attention. They rode this ‘bus’ through our small kitchen and living room while they both laughed and provided me with not only my hands to cook but also a fun soundtrack of playfulness to listen to. M hopped on at the ‘bus stop’ in the kitchen and ended at the well known station, ‘front door’.

Then, when she went to bed, we melted into the sofa and watched a movie together. Because, who needs to go to the gym when you drive the Tot Bus?

Randomness || Round 2

Gifts

DSC_0161

Happy Tuesday! I have so many things running through this crazy brain of mine that I can’t pick just one to write about. So, lucky you, here are all my thoughts of the moment:

  1. My girl is on her way to walking. She takes her little mouse toy on wheels and pushes it around my kitchen. Her little legs take tiny step after step as she carefully conducts every move. Then, she thinks even harder as she maneuvers her way around the mouse to push him out of a corner and continues..step, step. Those little legs moving might be the cutest thing I have ever laid eyes on. And, on one hand, I’m so proud of her. You can tell every fiber in her is concentrating and that she’s pretty proud of herself. On the other, wait stop. M. You can’t be old enough to walk.
  2. On the same token, I’m planning her first birthday. So far, I’ve sent out the invitations. That’s it. Nothing else. So, if you are coming be ready for a ‘surprise’ because I don’t even know what’s going down yet. So unlike me. Maybe it’s because I feel like M turning the big o-n-e has to be eons away. Not in a few weeks.
  3. Who knows where I can get a good swimsuit? I have tried on every acceptable ‘mom’ suit in the greater area with no luck. I think I’m just hoping that a miracle happens in the next week and I can somehow walk around in a pre-pregnancy bikini and nobody will notice my not so tight, not so un-steretchmarked stomach. Not happenin’. So, again, I ask…where do I find the perfect ‘I’m still young enough’ but also an ‘I had a baby’ swimsuit? Help!
  4. I went to Barre class last night for the first time in a while. Typing hurts. Moving hurts. In a good way.
  5. Today is the day I go get the filling they didn’t have time for last week at the dentist. Last time was better. Before I knew what getting a filling entailed. Now, I’m just hoping they lost my appointment. I’ll have to call later to confirm that they don’t in fact have me on the books {hopefully}.
  6. This picture has nothing to do with this post but I just thought it was so fitting. M is my little gift. To me, to her family and to anyone she meets. Once her little eyes smile at someone, I swear they can do nothing but smile back and act a tad bit goofy. A gift.

Enjoy! Melissa

Just Saying || Breakfast Date

BreakfastDate3

Passing Ships. Sometimes, I joke with Ky that we are passing ships on a busy day. I’m with M all day then, if I have plans {which, lets be serious, I will do anything to avoid exercising so I just don’t mention it and stay home most nights} , I get to see him for about an hour once he gets home and run out only to come home to a sleeping household. Yesterday was one of those days.

So, we decided to have a breakfast date this morning. Just saying, this was a great idea. Even though I had to pry myself out of bed a little earlier then normal {notice the wrinkly, slept in pajamas}, it was totally worth it. We didn’t eat anything fancy but it was nice to spend a few early morning minutes making plans for the rest of the week and having coffee together. Quick, simple and comforting.

Now, time to actually shower so as not to scare people throughout the day!

Enjoy! Melissa
