clean produce

DSC_2340

A few weeks ago, I went to visit my aunt in Arizona. I had no idea that she was in fact the Martha Stewart of summer entertaining. Over the course of a weekend, I learned so much from her about sharing your home with a group of people. First was that she had classy plastic utensils for everything. Wine glasses, plates, beer glasses….all plastic. No broken glass and easy clean up. Smart move. The second has changed the way I prep for my own family to eat over the course of the summer.

After a trip to the store, she took all the produce out, threw it into a bowl, washed it with produce wash then did the prep for eating (cut the strawberries, watermelon, etc) and put the produce in tupperware to grab at will from the fridge. Why have I never thought of this? Since then, I’ve been prepping all of our produce as soon as I get home from the store and we have been wasting less. The ease of grabbing it ready to eat means we reach for it more often.

The other thing I took in from all this was the way she washed her fruits and vegetables. I’ve always rinsed my produce in water before I ate anything but produce wash was new to  me. I was skeptable until she rinsed her strawberries then threw them in produce wash. Even after they had been rinsed off, the bowl had a layer of dirt on the bottom at the end of the soak session. I was so sick that I had been eating this and feeding it to my family. Makes total sense. It’s been in the ground, handled by who knows how many hands then placed in the store for you to go after. Anyway, I was totally convinced and have been using produce wash since. I also bought several bottles for friends and handed them out like candy.

It’s the easiest thing. Rinse your produce, add a squirt (or one tbs) of  wash to a bowl, drop in your produce, fill with water. Let it soak for about 2 minutes then give it another good rinse.

Try it!

comfort trending

1.jpgThere is no style I can get behind more then the comfort trend that seems to be taking over. A strong applause from me to whoever started this. The problem is, I’m just not sure how far I can go before I’ve taken it too far. Like Birkenstocks for example. I want them so badly and have tried them on at least three times but  just can’t quite get myself pull the trigger. As a compromise, I picked up these MTNG ‘earthy’ sandals and have been living in them lately.  I’ve also added a few other comfort items to my wardrobe and always seem to grab for them before anything else. I don’t know, what do you guys think….can you have too many comfortable pieces or is it all about what you do with them?

meet the pw bakers twine

DSC_2134 DSC_2151

Last night I sat down and tackled what had grown into an insane pile of mail. After weeks of coming and going (I’m baaacckkk by the way), I had thrown stack after stack down until it became too intimidating to deal with. Anyway, I was so thrilled that mixed into the annoying number of bills was a delightful number of invitations. Wedding Showers. Baby Showers. Weddings. Bachelorette Parties. Maybe I should open the mail more because, turns out, it was kinda’ fun.

I am already planning which gifts to buy, which new Pretty Wednesday bakers twine to wrap them with and some new gift tags, wrapping and cards to fit each occasion. I can’t wait to have them all in our shop!

in my suitcase

PicMonkey Collage.jpg

We are home from just over a week in Hawaii and although I miss my family, the palm trees and the whole toes in the sand thing, there is just something about your own bed that is so inviting. Am I right or am I right?

Anyway, while we were there, we moved between my parents house, an ocean front rental cottage and a hotel. I must have packed and unpacked my suitcase 20 times. I’m guessing that I left a piece of us at each location because man, M has lot of a stuff to keep track of. But, before I left anywhere, I checked and double checked that I had these five things with me. I couldn’t have made it a single day without them.

Babyganics Natural Insect Repellent : The bugs just eat M and I up on vacations. Last trip, I was unprepared and spraying her with any bug spray I could get my hands on. I felt so guilty about the chemicals while I was doing it but in the heat of the moment it was bug bites or bug spray. Spray won. This trip, I was ready for those blood suckers with this and it totally helped. We each ended up a with a few bites but nothing like last trip.

Neutrogena Sunblock Stick : Not only does this make sun blocking M’s face quick, it distracts her while I lotion up the rest of her body. She likes to apply this to her face herself. Wait until you see how white her face is in all of our pictures!

Rash Guard : Like I said, applying sun block to a toddler can be tricky. This helps so I can shield her from the sun and avoid a fight. Win!

Puddle Jumper Floatation Device : It is so funny to watch M walk around in these. She can’t put her arms down to her side so she’s like a little robot waddling around. But, when she’s in the water, these are a awesome. She swam like a fish with very little help from me.

Elastic Hair Ties : Vacation hair is sometimes not the best hair. Humidity is not my or M’s friend. So, both of us had our hair up using these ties almost the entire trip. Lifesaver.

easter outfit planning

EasterOutfit.jpgEaster is kind of a funny holiday to outfit plan for around here. The weather always seems to be going through some emotional issues this time of year and you just don’t know what you are going to get. There have been years where I’m shoving Cadbury Eggs and Peeps into my face while  the sun blazes down and other years where we huddle inside so as not to wash away in a virtual monsoon of rain. Anyway, because of that, the key to planning for Easter around here is layers and, well, waiting until the weather report is available to shop. That means there is no time for shipping and big box stores are where it’s at for finding an outfit for M. Here’s what M is planning on wearing this year.

Side note: I’m still looking for an outfit for me. Another funny thing about Easter…there doesn’t seem to be a standard of dress. I notice some families are dressed to the nines and others call it good when they give the wrinkles in their pajamas a little brush off. Any suggestions?

c’mon mothers day

PalletmdNot to be like those people who want to hang their Christmas lights November 1st and totally ignore Thanksgiving because I really really hate those people. (Lets not disrespect that scrumptious turkey!) But, I want to get the message out that Mother’s Day is just around the corner. I know, I know, it’s not even Easter but there is no doubt that those lovely women who have spent a good portion of their lives dealing with our shenanigans deserve a little forethought. Right?

I’m so excited that Pretty Wednesday can play a small role in celebrating some fine mother-lovin’ ladies this year. Local Etsy shop owner, Danna Gibson of Pallets I Reckon, came to me weeks ago asking if Pretty Wednesday could provide the gift tags for her awesome Mothers Day special. She had great ideas about the simplicity of the tags and had them attached to her cute gift set within seconds of receiving them.  So, if your mom needs a wall vase, pick one up from Danna. After all, won’t your mom need a place to put that bouquet of flowers you will also be bringing her on Mother’s Day?

tot reading

I’ve spent time filling you on my book club when really the biggest ‘reader’ in our house is M. At 22 months, she has her favorites, makes special requests for them and recites certain pages and sections by heart. I have to admit that these are pretty enjoyable for me as well. They include an actual story line (unlike those books that somehow start all about puppies until they seem to run out of material and suddenly make a random switch to bunnies) and some humor. Any children’s book that can keep both a 22 month old and me entertained and laughing after about 1,374 readings has more then exceeded expectations.

I’m looking for a few new reads to add to our collection so if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them!

my mom purse

In My Bag .jpgLike most things since M arrived, she has now hijacked my purse and made it her own. For the first year, I carried a diaper bag full of so many unnecessary baby items. Then, as she got older, and my shoulder started screaming at me every time I slung that huge bag on, I transitioned to carrying her stuff in my purse. Along with my typical wallet, M camera iPhone and crumpled pile of receipts, I’ve accumulated an arsenal of toddler items to make our time outside of the house easier. What do you carry for your kids? I’m so curious!

  1.  Snacks. Always Always filled with small ‘nummies’. The most important item for making it through any shopping trip with my girl.
  2. Honest Diapers.  We’ve used these since she was born and I think I might actually be sad to see these cute patterns go once potty training commences.
  3. Grocery Bag. Environmentally friendly. Do it!
  4. Water. Gotta’ wash those snacks down somehow.
  5. Lip Balm. You would think this is for me. Nope. This is for M to rub not only on her lips but all over her face. She’s minty fresh people.
  6. Hair Ties. Have to tame that mane!  These are the ONLY hair ties that M doesn’t immediately yell ‘ouch ouch’ and rip out.
  7.  Sunglasses. In excess. Apparently, we each need about 3 pairs at all times.
  8. Travel Size Honest Wipes. For months, I carried around the full size bag of wipes only to need a few. This travel size is amazing! 10 wipes is just enough.
  9. Antibacterial Spray. After a few bouts with some unnecessary sicknesses, I’m now that mom with the hand spray.
  10. Travel Bib. Meals on the go are messy. Next to the snack cup, I probably use this the most.
  11. Bright Lipstick. Nope, not for M. This is to trick people into thinking I had time to properly put on makeup today.

barre3 mill creek

DSC_0520

Lets get one thing straight here. I am not a gym rat, generally avoid most exercise and make about every excuse in the world to not workout. Now that that’s all clear, lets talk about my love for Barre3, the only exercise I can honestly say I enjoy. My first experience with this sneakily fun workout was about three months after M was born. Like every new mom, I wanted my pre baby body back but the only franchise near me was just far enough from my house that all my usual excuses kept me from going very often.

Cue about two weeks ago and some angels singing and a new location opened about ten minutes from my house. Last week, I went in to give it a try and let me tell you, I’m hooked. Mill Creek’s new Barre3 is beautiful, if you can call a workout facility beautiful. There is a changing room (as opposed to changing in the restroom as I’ve done at other locations), a separated child care area and enough space for everyone to store their goods before heading into the studio where I grabbed my ball, weights and bellied up to the barre.

The owner of this location, Marne, is a former attorney who turned instructor and franchise owner after falling in love with the workout. I had to chuckle when all the women in my class simultaneously groaned every time Marne queued the tiniest of motions that somehow bring the heat. A feeling that seems to be a Barre3 speciality.

The point here is that I can’t wait to go back. Mill Creek is running a few pricing specials and opportunities for new clients so if you’ve never been, now is the time. Plus, I really need some workout buddies to help me get in shape for swimsuit season. Lets do this!

mid vegas update

DSC_0299Mid Vegas Update. Now you are thinking it’s like I’m saying ‘mid spring break update’. But, really, we are getting down to business here folks. No shenanigans in these parts.

Here are just a few pictures and a quick quick update (because apparently working then blogging makes you a very snappy blogger) of what we are doing here in Vegas.

My Ties is showing at AccessoriesTheShow and Lindsay (Owner and CEO) and I are working our cute booth like crazy and having a great time. Lets just say that my feet are elevated on two pillows tonight and I saw a man get tackled to the ground and twisted up like a pretzel by a few security guards earlier. Business and Vegas. Funny Pairing!

Also, have I mentioned that I miss my girl? More on her tomorrow but I’m just loving all the pictures I’m getting from my amazing family and Ky who have been watching her. I have awesome people on this team of mine.

Enjoy! Melissa
