small gift packaging

DSC_2255It seems like the season of summer, dinners and fabulously long days has hit. (Not to talk about the weather again but really, the weather…..) The truth is, it hasn’t been that nice here the past week or so. It’s rained a little, poured a little and we’ve had ‘sun breaks’ here and there. Doesn’t seem to have stopped us pacific north-westerners from wearing skirts with rain boots and celebrating that bbq season has arrived (everywhere else) though. I always like to bring a hostess gift when someone is gracious enough to have us but it can start to add up quickly so my trusty go-to gift this summer is stationary. It’s been a hit so far and I’ve enjoyed dressing up some small packaging to bring to the hostess. I love a small but easy present. Thought you might too!

DSC_2243All you need is a scrap piece of fabric, a gift tag, scissors and twine.

DSC_2260 DSC_2263 DSC_2266 DSC_2267Start by laying your gift tag on top of your scrap fabric. Then cut around it making your fabric piece as wide or as thin as you would like. After, I cut the bottom of my fabric into a flag shape and rounded the top but you can shape your fabric however you please. Then, make sure to cut a small slit in the top center of the fabric.

DSC_2273 DSC_2277Next, I wound my twine around the gift bag three times and put the strings through the hole I cut in the fabric. Next put both strings over the top of the gift tag and back through the fabric. Tie it off under the fabric piece.

DSC_2280 DSC_2291I like this idea for small gifts, favor bags or even to fancy up a snack bag. It’s so easy!

c’mon mothers day

PalletmdNot to be like those people who want to hang their Christmas lights November 1st and totally ignore Thanksgiving because I really really hate those people. (Lets not disrespect that scrumptious turkey!) But, I want to get the message out that Mother’s Day is just around the corner. I know, I know, it’s not even Easter but there is no doubt that those lovely women who have spent a good portion of their lives dealing with our shenanigans deserve a little forethought. Right?

I’m so excited that Pretty Wednesday can play a small role in celebrating some fine mother-lovin’ ladies this year. Local Etsy shop owner, Danna Gibson of Pallets I Reckon, came to me weeks ago asking if Pretty Wednesday could provide the gift tags for her awesome Mothers Day special. She had great ideas about the simplicity of the tags and had them attached to her cute gift set within seconds of receiving them.  So, if your mom needs a wall vase, pick one up from Danna. After all, won’t your mom need a place to put that bouquet of flowers you will also be bringing her on Mother’s Day?

Remember that one time we had a pop up Etsy shop and things sold like wild fire? Yup. Me too.

I’ve been putting in some wicked hours lately to bring new garlands to shop. I dreamt up a mix of patterns, colors and shapes that weren’t available the first time and slowly, slowly they are coming to life. We should be opening on a more permanent basis very very soon (think next week-ish).

If you have any ideas that you would like to suggest for the shop, please share! The world is your oyster at this point as I am still developing. Please, suggest away.

Oh’ and if you see anything you just have to have asap on here, let me know and we’ll make some magic happen for you.

Enjoy! Melissa

rebranding

PicMonkey Collage.pngYou may have noticed a tidbit of rebranding going on around here. A few weeks ago, I had a little pow-wow with one of my favorite graphic artists,Kendra of  Hen & Co, to come up with a new logo for Pretty Wednesday. With the prep for the Etsy shop to open on a more permanent basis underway (yay!!!), it was time to get some cohesive branding in order.

We were inspired by a mix of fonts that PW already had been showcasing as well as some new stuff like the idea of stamp. You’ll be seeing these colors, patterns and of course the logo in full swing here on the blog as well as in our paper materials (thank you’s, shipping packaging, etc) in the Etsy shop.

Side Note; I’m surprised Hen & Co didn’t fire me during this design process. Not only did I give her a ridiculous timeline but I must have emailed about 1,273 changes to her. After working in the promotional products world for years, I now realize I am totally one of THOSE clients. The ones I hated. Practically had to get a coffee, put your feet up and get comfortable just to make it through their emails. You guys – my emails were numbered, bulleted, probably 6 pages long each and just stupid. Get. It. Together. Melissa.

meet larry

Larry.jpgLarry, the cardboard moose, was a mad dash New Years Eve purchase on Brickyard Buffalo. He arrived early last week and since then I have been sprucing him with a little cream and gold spray paint. He’s now made a home above my bed and, hopefully, you’ll be seeing him again soon in the shop displaying some stunning paper garlands. Just thought you two should meet since he’s now part of the fam!

The great news (so you don’t have to go through your day feeling a cloud of gloom over our closing) is that we are offing a coupon code for the final countdown. Decorating For SC

Favorite Christmas

Normally, I enforce the ‘one holiday at a time’ rule in our house. No decorating for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. Some of you may say bah humbug to that but I’m really not scroogy. It’s just that I love Thanksgiving (or not so much the actual day, more like I love the food) and I don’t want to breeze over it. I respect the person who tackles that Thanksgiving meal more then they’ll ever know and plan to NEVER let that duty fall in my lap (unless for some reason everyone would like cold, mistimed food and possible food poisoning…then OK) so lets raise our glasses to them and let Thanksgiving have it’s moment.

This year is different though. The season is shorter and we are heading out of town for a while to celebrate with family. So, this Sunday, it’s decorating day in my house. The lights are going up outside soon and we’ll be all ready to swing into full Christmas mode when we arrive home from our vaca. I thought I would share with you the things I’m most excited to be spending time with for the next month.

1. I bought this awesome print from Hen & Co this year and I am so excited to add it to my wall for the season. I’m finding that being able to change out prints seasonally is my favorite part of having gone through the pain of hanging a collage wall in my family room.  This little deer may sneak up a few days early as I’m being really impatient about getting to hang with him.

2. I’m a little (or a lot) crazy and insist that my Christmas tree only have matching ornaments. No mismatched pickles with sunglasses or dancing elephants on our tree. So, to allow for the fun ornaments, we have a small table top tree in our kitchen that gets all the mis-matchers. (I’m feeling like it sounds like the land of misfit toys, but I swear it’s not.) This year, we are adding our initials to the tree for a little sparkle.

3. In keeping with my crazy, I make a quick trip to Crate and Barrel every holiday season and pick up one or two new silver or gold ornaments for our big tree. These year, I’m into these! Clearly I’m into the silver and gold holiday theme but I think I would like to mix it up next year. What colors do you decorate with? Let me know if you have any recommendations!

4. Costco for the win on this one. I go every year and pick up a fresh garland for our mantel. Something about the fire underneath (burning with care obviously) and the stockings hanging just so make my house feel so cozy during the holidays. This year, I’ll also be stringing a paper garland from our pop-up-shop around the fresh garland for a pop of color.  (Reminder: Only 3 days left before the shop closes!!)

5. Most of the year I’m not a huge fan of personalized items. I just really don’t need to see my name everywhere but these stockings are so traditional that I have to do it. We each have one and Santa fills them along with a pair of pajamas on the side every Christmas Eve. (Thanks SC!)

6. I LOVE TO WRAP PRESENTS! I think it goes with my love for paper products but something about a well wrapped gift makes it that much better. Last year, I made salt dough gift tags  that could be used for ornaments (clearly not on your big tree, only on your misfits tree) as well. If you are looking for a fun punch on your gifts this year, I really recommend these.

Enjoy!

I have some crazy exciting news!

The wheels have been turning for a while, my sewing machine has been in high gear and my wrist hurts from cutting and cutting because the Pretty Wednesday Pop-Up Etsy shop is OPEN! I’ve stocked it full of some awesome Thanksgiving paper garland and a few previews to a holiday line. We’ll only be open for four days as we have some family Thanksgiving time on the horizon so get your orders in now.

I decorated with these hand crafted garlands for Halloween in my own home and got so many comments from guests that I thought everyone deserved some garland in their life. And away went production!

Oh’ and did I mention that for being amazing blog followers and readers, you are hearing my fun news an hour before anyone else? Next up is a little Instagram announcement, then we’ll shout it from the roof tops. So, if any of the one-of-a-kind items are on your must have list, you have a little time before the crowds come a knockin.

Enjoy! Melissa
